Thanks for the post! I'm going to link to this from my Institute of Photography Facebook page as I think my students will learn from this.

One point though, the lowest ISO setting on a Canon 40D is 100 but when Highlight Tone Priority is enabled (C. Fn II) then that limit is increased to 200.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Murray. Certainly something i have thought about since the shoot. I personally dont mind the light falling on the ground. I'll certainly return to shoot the wreck again.

maybe flag off the strobes so you dont get so much spill on the ground before the wreck?

or stop it down so it's a much longer exposure to smooth the water out

Maybe flag off the spill on the ground before the wreck?

stop it down a bit and you would smooth out the water

Otherwise, well captured.

Congrats to you and your wife. I'll give my biggest tip based on this post. Use a tripod. ;) I started letting my little one play with the tripod when I would set up light stands, lights, etc... I didn't always need the tripod for some of my indoor "studio" type shots, so it was no big deal. However, now whenever the tripod comes out, my now 18-month year old wants to play with it. Not ideal when you actually need to use it.
